Mike's Cherokee Build - The Green PoS

RE: Mike's Cherokee Build - The Green PoS
Well last night would have been an AWESOME bloopers reel. Seriously. What a fuster cluck.

Drained the diff. It had the correct amount of ... something in there. 1/2 mud, 1/2 gear oil. What a mess. The pinion bearing was full of mud. Like I was tapping on it and it was falling out.

Brought it back outside to clean it with some brake cleaner. Way too much crap in it for brake cleaner. Decided to put it on some jack stands and put a cup or so of kerosene in, spin the pinion, then dump it back out. That worked well until the axle fell off the stands, hit the bucket and gave me a kerosene bath.

Then I spent 2 hours trying to get the @#$@#$@#$ inner axle seals in. I think Rock Auto sent me the wrong ones. They wouldn't go in straight. Eventually I found that if I drove them in sideways, then tapped them back in, they would (appear to) fit correctly. I don't think they will last too long before needing replacement again.

So ... next time I'm able to work on it , I will be putting the locker in the carrier (the ring gear had to come off - the internet lies!!) and swapping the U Joints and putting in the new wheel bearing.

Then off to brake lines , shocks, engine mounts.

I may even buy a flare wrench so I don't have to run new lines when I round off the fittings.

Sometimes you're your own worst enemy.

I made a tool out of threaded rod and some nuts with big washers to push on both inner axle seals at the same time straight on. Even with that they are a total pain in the ass.

Hope the rest of the project goes smoother. Kinda wish there was video of the kerosene shower, that had to be funny!

I'll have to make something like that. I don't think these ones are going to last long.

There would be a lot of bleeps if we were to make it PG-13 haha.

I can take a picture of the dead spot on the lawn in the spring.

Got the LOKKA installed. And U Joints and one new wheel bearing. I also got rid of the 12 point bolts for the wheel bearings and went with a regular hex head grade 10.9. Got them from Hiawatha fasteners for the price of ONE of the 12 point bolts from the dealer.

Gotta finish tightening the ring gear and axle nuts and it is ready to go back in the Jeep and leak gear oil everywhere.

I also tested to make sure it ratchets. Wouldn't want to get it in the Jeep and realize I installed it wrong or backwards or something.

FWIW - the lunchbox locker won't go in as one piece.

We're talking a vehicle designed by American Motors and Renault. With mechanical components from various manufacturers. Manufactured by Chrysler with Chrysler electronics. I'm not sure it's possible to ever work the kinks out.

Axle is back under the jeep.

Had some problems getting the frame end of the drivers lower control arm in. Turns out when it was in a wreck and suffered frame damage ... it bent the control arm "box" and the caster adjuster. Spent some time bending it back and did end up getting it in.

Steering is hooked up. Just gotta do the Brake lines and engine mounts for Saturday.

The axle is back where it.belongs, not pulled back because the control arms are too short

The longer control arms and shocks give a ridiculous amount if down travel. Will be nice articulation

Definitely going to try to put in some 1.5 inch spacers and shackle brackets at some point. Soon hopefully.

I'm hoping it will be able to handle the smaller trails at your place without having to be dragged the whole way haha.
